John Lee Porter, a 59-year-old man, was fatally shot on July 25, 2014, in Brookhaven, Mississippi, following a dispute that began inside a local establishment. The altercation started as a verbal disagreement inside a venue known as 'Brother Jay's Club' on Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Drive.
The argument between Porter and another man, identified as 63-year-old Clyde Smith, escalated and moved into the club's parking lot after threats were made.
At approximately 5:37 p.m., officers from the Brookhaven Police Department were dispatched to the scene and discovered Porter on the ground with at least one gunshot wound. Smith was still present in the parking lot when the police arrived.
Emergency services transported Porter to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment. Despite undergoing surgery, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:28 p.m. that evening.
Law enforcement arrested Clyde Smith in connection with the shooting. Initially, he was charged with aggravated assault and was released on a $100,000 bond. Following Porter's death, the charges against Smith were upgraded to murder.
