In the winter of 2014, the life of a young Black man, 24-year-old Reondricus Rogers, was tragically cut short in Meridian, Mississippi. On the evening of December 15th, police responded to a call of a shooting around 6:15 p.m. in the 800 block of 25th Avenue. Upon arrival, they found Rogers, who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest from a small-caliber handgun.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly identified two individuals from Montgomery, Alabama, as persons of interest. Within days of the shooting, Leroy Lamont Lewis and Payton A. Bailey were located and detained in their hometown. Lewis was subsequently extradited to Meridian to face charges of murder and aggravated assault. Bailey was charged with two counts of accessory after the fact. The incident that led to the fatal shooting appeared to stem from a dispute over a botched drug deal.
More than three years after Rogers' death, the trial of Leroy Lamont Lewis commenced in March 2018. During the proceedings, testimony revealed the events of that December day.
