In the autumn of 2020, the life of Charquez Xavier Mercer, a 25-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in Meridian, Mississippi. On the evening of October 23rd, Mercer was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds, injuries that proved to be fatal. The incident, which took place at the intersection of 16th Avenue and 23rd Street, was the culmination of a violent altercation.
The Meridian Police Department launched a thorough investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to 21-year-old Kenneth Barrett, who was subsequently arrested and charged with murder in connection with Mercer's death. Investigators found Mercer's car at the scene of the shooting. A juvenile who was also in the vehicle at the time of the incident was interviewed by police. According to the juvenile's account, Barrett shot Mercer while they were in the car.
During questioning, Barrett provided investigators with several conflicting narratives of the events that transpired. In one version, he claimed the shooting was accidental, stating that he and Mercer were showing each other their firearms when his weapon discharged by mistake. Another account described an ambush scenario where Mercer was killed while they were driving, with Barrett claiming he was attempting to stop the car to render aid. However, police determined that Barrett's stories were inconsistent with video evidence they had obtained. It was also revealed that Barrett had claimed to be under the influence of drugs on the night of the shooting, though law enforcement concluded his actions were not impaired.
Further complicating Barrett's legal situation was the fact that he was already out on bond for a prior armed robbery charge at the time of Mercer's death. Citing this, a judge denied bond for Barrett in the murder case. The community and Mercer's family were left to mourn a senseless act of violence as the legal process against the accused began to unfold.
