In the early hours of December 4, 2016, a tragic event unfolded in Meridian, Mississippi, that cut short the life of 40-year-old Iam David Simon, a Black/African American male. Simon, an engineer known for his dedication to his work and community, was discovered deceased on Russell Drive, near the Highway 39 overpass. He was found next to a still-running rental car, having sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.

At the time of his death, Simon, who was not a resident of Mississippi, had just left JJ's Club on Russell Drive. Investigators believe the motive for the attack was robbery, as Simon's wallet was missing from the scene. The violent end to a life of a man described as a devoted father, son, husband, and friend sent ripples of grief through his community.

The Meridian Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to identify a primary suspect, Henry Javada Clemons. Warrants were issued for Clemons' arrest on charges of murder and armed robbery. The search for Clemons extended across Lauderdale and Neshoba counties. In connection with the case, authorities also arrested Sherry Renee Wilson, charging her with two counts of accessory after the fact. It was reported that Clemons, Wilson, and Simon had all departed from JJ's Club shortly before Simon's body was discovered.

The manhunt for Clemons concluded with his apprehension by United States Marshals in San Antonio, Texas. Following his arrest, the legal process began, with the case being prepared for the district attorney to present to a grand jury. The diligent work of law enforcement brought a sense of resolution to a community mourning the senseless loss of one of its own.
