In Meridian, Mississippi, on the evening of Sunday, March 6, 2022, a sense of disquiet settled over the 2100 block of 43rd Avenue as two separate, yet possibly connected, shootings shattered the calm. The first incident, which would be recorded as the city's initial homicide of the year, claimed the life of 21-year-old Quadarius Short. Officers from the Meridian Police Department responded to a call at 5:42 p.m.
and discovered Short in a backyard, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Quadarius Short moved forward, and on April 15, 2022, an arrest warrant was issued for 23-year-old Kamion Land. A few days later, Land turned himself in to the authorities and was subsequently charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting. He was held without bond. The events of that March evening had also seen another man arrive at the emergency room with multiple gunshot wounds just minutes after Short was found. While detectives believe both shootings occurred in the same block, it remained unclear if the two incidents were directly related.
