In the late summer of 2014, the life of 27-year-old Raphael Robert Taylor, a male resident of Meridian, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. In the early hours of Saturday, August 30, 2014, a 911 call was made by a woman who reported a man being hit by a car on Earl Haney Road. However, when deputies from the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department arrived at the scene around 12:30 a.m., they discovered that Taylor had been shot twice. He was found lying in the middle of the road.
Witnesses in the vicinity later reported hearing gunshots around 10 p.m. that night and saw a large, dark-colored SUV, possibly maroon with blacked-out rims, leaving the area shortly after. Taylor was initially transported to a local hospital in Meridian and then transferred to the University Medical Center in Jackson, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on Sunday, August 31, 2014.
The investigation into Raphael Robert Taylor's death quickly transitioned into a homicide case. The Meridian Police Department and the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their efforts led to the identification of several individuals as persons of interest. Within a few weeks of the incident, arrests were made in connection with the murder. Three suspects were taken into custody. Lorenzo Dominque Norman, 23, of Meridian, was arrested and charged with murder, with his bond set at $200,000. Shortly after, Laquanda Shonta Pierce was also arrested and charged with murder in connection to Taylor's death, with her bond also set at $200,000. A third individual, 27-year-old Willie Earl Taylor of Meridian, was charged with accessory after the fact and contempt of court. His bond was set at $40,000. The arrests marked a significant development in the investigation, bringing some measure of hope for justice to the victim's family and the Meridian community.
