In the summer of 2018, the life of a 39-year-old Black transgender woman, Diamond Stephens, was tragically cut short in Meridian, Mississippi. On the evening of June 18th, Stephens was found inside her van, which had crashed into a house. However, the crash was not the cause of her death. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head. At the time of her death, family members reported that she was on her way home to prepare for work.
