In the summer of 2018, the life of a 39-year-old Black transgender woman, Diamond Stephens, was tragically cut short in Meridian, Mississippi. On the evening of June 18th, Stephens was found inside her van, which had crashed into a house. However, the crash was not the cause of her death. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head. At the time of her death, family members reported that she was on her way home to prepare for work.
The initial response to Stephens' death was complicated by a lack of understanding and respect for her identity. Early news reports and law enforcement officials misgendered and used her former name, which caused a delay in the broader community's awareness of the violent loss of a transgender woman.
