In the summer of 2023, the life of 48-year-old Tonio Matthew, a Black male from Meridian, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. On the morning of Tuesday, July 11th, a concerned citizen made a grim discovery on 14th Street, finding Matthew unresponsive. Law enforcement and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene, where they determined that he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

The Meridian Police Department launched a homicide investigation, which quickly led them to their first suspect. Just a day after the discovery of Matthew's body, on July 12, 2023, authorities announced the arrest of 35-year-old Tommy Croft Jr. He was taken into custody and faced serious charges of murder and grand larceny. A judge set his bond at $1 million for the murder charge and an additional $10,000 for the grand larceny charge, indicating the severity of the alleged crimes.

As the investigation continued to unfold, a second individual was implicated in connection with Tonio Matthew's death. On Saturday, July 23, 2023, the Meridian Police Department announced a second arrest. Forty-one-year-old Rolando McAllister was taken into custody and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. His bond was set at $100,000. While the specifics of the grand larceny and the precise roles each man allegedly played in the events leading to Matthew's death have not been fully detailed publicly, the case against both Croft and McAllister is proceeding through the justice system. The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the death of Tonio Matthew.
