In the spring of 2018, the life of 51-year-old Charles Berry Hughes, a Black male from Jackson, Mississippi, was cut short in a burst of violence. On the evening of Sunday, May 13th, Hughes was involved in an altercation that ended in gunfire. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a local hospital for emergency medical care. For five days, he fought for his life, but the damage was too severe.
On Friday, May 18, 2018, Charles Hughes succumbed to his wounds.
The Jackson Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. In the days following the incident, as Hughes lay in the hospital, detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter. Their investigation soon pointed to a suspect: Prentice Rashad Wilson. A warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with the shooting. As the search for him intensified, Wilson made the decision to turn himself in to the authorities, surrendering to the Jackson Police Department.
Following his arrest, Prentice Rashad Wilson was charged with the murder of Charles Hughes. He was subsequently indicted by a grand jury, and the case proceeded through the criminal justice system. In February 2020, Wilson's trial commenced in Hinds County Circuit Court. Over the course of the proceedings, the jury heard testimony and was presented with evidence related to the shooting. After deliberations, the jury found Prentice Rashad Wilson guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. For his role in the death of Charles Hughes, Wilson was sentenced to serve 20 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
