In the early morning hours of March 21, 2021, a fatal shooting incident occurred in Jackson, Mississippi, claiming the life of 30-year-old Black male Christopher Moncure. The violence erupted outside the M-Bar Sports Grill located on Ridgewood Court around 2:30 a.m., a time when patrons were likely leaving the establishment. Investigators determined that Moncure was not a participant in the conflict but rather an innocent bystander who was tragically struck by gunfire during a shootout
involving multiple individuals. He had been attempting to seek cover when the shots rang out, but he was unable to escape the chaotic exchange of bullets.
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office launched an immediate investigation into the homicide, utilizing surveillance footage from the venue to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. The video evidence proved crucial, showing several men entering the back door of the business shortly before the altercation. Authorities released images from this footage to the public, seeking assistance in identifying the individuals involved. The investigation revealed that the dispute which led to the gunfire had nothing to do with Moncure, who simply happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Following the release of the surveillance material and the subsequent investigative work, law enforcement officers identified and arrested four suspects in connection with Moncure's death. The suspects were identified as 26-year-old Deantay Duffie, 24-year-old Johnnie Donaldson Jr., 21-year-old Frederius Wash, and 22-year-old Robert Caston. All four men were charged with murder. During their initial court appearances, judges denied bond for some of the defendants due to the severity of the charges. In addition to the murder charge, Deantay Duffie faced a count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The arrests brought a measure of resolution to the initial phase of the case, highlighting the collaborative effort between detectives and the community to apprehend those believed to be responsible for the senseless loss of life.
