On a spring day in Vicksburg, Mississippi, a dispute that began at a gas station escalated into a fatal encounter for 37-year-old Moses Luckett. On May 15, 2020, following the initial altercation, Summer Rena McGee, then 21, went to Luckett's residence at the New Main Apartments on Alcorn Drive. When Luckett answered his door, McGee shot him in the chest. A second shot was fired through the door after it was closed.
Though officers found Luckett still alive, he later succumbed to his gunshot wound.
McGee fled the scene in a white Ford pickup truck driven by her brother, Bobby Gene McGee. Their escape was cut short when Yazoo County Sheriff's deputies stopped the vehicle on State Highway 3, just north of the Warren County line. Summer McGee was taken into custody at the scene. Her brother, Bobby, fled into the nearby woods. His freedom was temporary, as he was later apprehended.
The subsequent legal proceedings brought the siblings to justice for their roles in Luckett's death. The Warren County grand jury indicted both Summer and Bobby Gene McGee in connection with the killing. Summer McGee was initially charged with first-degree murder and held on a $1 million bond. During her trial in July 2021, she entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of second-degree murder. On August 24, 2021, a judge sentenced her to 40 years in prison, with 30 years to be served and 10 years suspended, followed by five years of post-release supervision. Bobby Gene McGee was also indicted for first-degree murder for his part in the incident and was scheduled to be tried separately.
