On the early morning of July 30, 2023, law enforcement officers in Vicksburg, Mississippi, responded to reports of gunfire that would lead to a homicide investigation involving a 20-year-old Black male named Brendyn Carmen. Around 1:30 a.m., Warren County sheriff’s deputies discovered a wrecked blue Nissan Maxima on First North Street. Inside the vehicle, they found Carmen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the emergency response, he was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a violent end to the weekend in the local community.
Investigation into the incident revealed that the fatal shooting likely originated blocks away near the 1600 block of Court Street. Police determined that the violence began there before Carmen attempted to flee in his vehicle, ultimately crashing a short distance away. In the same sequence of events, authorities located a second individual on Court Street who had sustained gunshot wounds to both legs. This surviving victim was transported for medical treatment, while detectives worked to piece together the chaotic events that connected the two scenes.
By August 7, 2023, the Vicksburg Police Department had identified a suspect in the case. Larry Bell Jr., an 18-year-old resident of Vicksburg, was taken into custody and charged with capital murder and armed robbery. Investigators alleged that Bell had attempted to rob Carmen on Court Street, a confrontation that escalated into the deadly shooting. The charges indicated that the homicide occurred during the commission of another felony, elevating the severity of the legal implications for the teenager.
Following his arrest, Bell made his initial court appearance before Judge Angela Carpenter in Vicksburg Municipal Court. During this proceeding, the judge set his bond at $2 million due to the capital nature of the charges. The case was subsequently bound over to the Warren County Grand Jury for further deliberation, leaving the accused in the Warren County Jail as the judicial process moved forward.
