In Vicksburg, Mississippi, what began as a dispute over a basketball game on a June evening in 2023 ultimately led to the death of 21-year-old Dapeytric Coleman. The incident, which unfolded on Martha Street, escalated from a verbal argument to a fatal shooting.
The conflict started when Coleman and Kameron Williams, 20, got into a heated exchange during a basketball game where Williams was gambling with a friend.
Witnesses reported that after about 10 minutes of arguing, Williams retrieved a handgun from a vehicle and returned to the court. Following another verbal confrontation, Williams was the only one armed. Coleman then grabbed a pistol from a friend who was at the scene. It was at this point that Williams shot Coleman multiple times in the back. Williams also sustained a gunshot wound to his foot during the altercation.
Police were dispatched to the 1700 block of Martha Street at 8:19 p.m. where they found Coleman with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Kameron Williams was arrested later that evening at Merit Health River Region after receiving treatment for his injury. He was charged with first-degree murder, and his bond was set at $750,000.
Williams' first trial for the murder of Dapeytric Coleman ended in a hung jury, leading to a mistrial in July 2025. During the trials, the prosecution argued that Williams was the aggressor who introduced a deadly weapon to the argument. The defense contended that Williams acted in self-defense, claiming Coleman was the aggressor and had been influenced by alcohol and ecstasy. Williams himself testified that Coleman fired the first shot. However, prosecutors questioned this claim, pointing to the evidence that Coleman was shot multiple times in the back. In his second trial, which concluded in September 2025, Kameron Williams was found guilty of murder. A judge subsequently sentenced him to life in prison.
