Willie Ray Jones, a 28-year-old man, was last seen alive on July 6, 2020, in Pearl River County, Mississippi. His family reported him missing that day, launching an investigation that would uncover a tragic story of betrayal and greed. Jones was known to carry a significant amount of cash, between $10,000 and $40,000, in a shoebox, a fact that allegedly led to his demise.
The last person Jones was seen with was his longtime friend, Dustin Gray.
According to investigators, Gray had arranged to give Jones a ride under the guise of helping him purchase illegal narcotics. However, the prosecution contended that this was a premeditated scheme to rob and murder Jones. The plan was allegedly concocted by Gray and his half-brother, Austin Brookshire. It was in the backseat of Dustin Gray’s car in a rural part of Pearl River County that Willie Ray Jones was shot multiple times.
After the murder, Brookshire and Gray drove to neighboring Hancock County, where they buried Jones's body in a shallow grave on Texas Flat Road. In the hours that followed, Dustin Gray attempted to have his vehicle cleaned at a car wash, but employees refused after noticing blood in the interior. This refusal would later become a key piece of evidence.
The investigation quickly identified Dustin Gray and his wife, Erica Gray, as persons of interest. The couple fled to Pueblo, Colorado, where they were apprehended by U.S. Marshals on an unrelated firearms charge and extradited back to Mississippi. Following their arrest and interviews with investigators, the location of Jones's remains was discovered. An autopsy later confirmed his identity and that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Ultimately, Austin Brookshire and Dustin Gray were charged with first-degree murder. Erica Gray and a juvenile were charged with accessory after the fact. In May 2023, Austin Brookshire was found guilty of the murder of Willie Ray Jones and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. Dustin Gray was also charged and awaited trial. Erica Gray faced charges for her alleged role in attempting to conceal the crime.
