On a late Friday night in Lowndes County, Mississippi, the sound of an altercation pierced the air on Swedenburg Circle, followed shortly by the eruption of gunfire from multiple weapons. When deputies arrived around 10 p.m. on July 9, 2021, they found 22-year-old Quinshawn Dewayne Lucious suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, the young man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another man was also injured in the shooting and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
Quinshawn, a graduate of West Lowndes High School who had attended Coahoma Junior College and Jackson State University, was born on September 17, 1998, in Columbus. His family was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss, his mother describing the horrific scene of her son passing away in her husband's arms. The incident, which investigators treated as a drive-by shooting, spurred a plea from the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department for witnesses to come forward with any information that could lead to an arrest.
The investigation that followed relied on a combination of forensic data, witness interviews, and crucial footage from Ring Doorbell cameras in the neighborhood. This led investigators to identify several suspects. The first break in the case came when Jamarquis Antjuan Summerville, 33, was pulled over for unrelated traffic charges in a vehicle that matched the description of one seen leaving the scene of the shooting. He was subsequently charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Shortly thereafter, deputies apprehended two teenagers in connection with the fatal shooting. Da'Quavious Robertson, who was 17 at the time, and 16-year-old Dorian Williams were arrested.
In November 2021, a Lowndes County grand jury indicted both Robertson and Williams on charges of murder and aggravated assault for their alleged roles in the death of Quinshawn Lucious and the injury of the second victim. As of that time, a trial date had not yet been scheduled for the two teenagers accused in the shooting.
