In the days leading up to Christmas, a sense of unease settled over a Columbus, Mississippi neighborhood. On the evening of Wednesday, December 20, 2023, residents on 21st Street North reported hearing gunshots, but no calls were made to the police. The following morning, Thursday, December 21, 2023, the tragic outcome of those sounds became devastatingly clear. The body of Jerome Taylor, a 49-year-old man, was discovered on the front lawn of a home. Mr.
Taylor, who lived nearby but not at the residence where he was found, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jerome Taylor, born on May 17, 1974, was a father to his sons, Javon and Travon Taylor, and a grandfather of two. He was formerly employed by Wheeler Roofing. His sudden and violent death marked a somber note in the community, prompting a homicide investigation by the Columbus Police Department. The Lowndes County Coroner confirmed Mr. Taylor's identity, and investigators quickly determined he had been shot the previous evening, around the time the gunshots were heard.
The investigation into Jerome Taylor's death led to an arrest later that month. Dorian Williams was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of Mr. Taylor. In September 2024, Williams made his initial appearance in Columbus Municipal Court, where his bond was set at $1,000,000. As the legal process moves forward, the family and community await justice for a life cut short.
