In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Coahoma, Mississippi, tragedy struck, leaving a community in shock and mourning the loss of two of its own. On August 10, 2021, 51-year-old Regina Smith-Hopkins was killed in a shooting incident. Another victim, 14-year-old Zymarious Smith, also lost his life in the violent encounter that wounded two others.
When deputies from the Coahoma County Sheriff's Department arrived at the scene just before 10 p.m., they found multiple victims of gunfire.
Ms. Smith-Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other individuals were transported to a local hospital in Clarksdale, where Zymarious Smith ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The incident prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by the Coahoma County Sheriff's Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations.
In the days following the fatal shooting, authorities made progress in their investigation, leading to the arrest of three suspects. Jerry Seamster, who was 30 at the time, along with 23-year-old D'Amonte Abrams and 24-year-old DeAngelo Abrams, were taken into custody. Each of the three men was charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault for their alleged roles in the shooting that ended the lives of Regina Smith-Hopkins and Zymarious Smith.
Following their arrests, the three suspects were held in the Coahoma County Jail in Clarksdale without bond as they awaited further legal proceedings. The investigation into the double homicide continued as the community began to grieve the loss of a woman described as a sweet and loving person who was fun to be around. Funeral services for Ms. Smith-Hopkins were held on September 4, 2021, at Union Grove Baptist Church, with her burial taking place at Heavenly Rest Cemetery. She was a former postal worker and correctional officer, employed at the Core Civic Correctional Facility at the time of her death.
