In the spring of 2023, the life of 16-year-old JaKamori “Kamori” Lake was tragically cut short in Gulfport, Mississippi. The teenager, who was three and a half months pregnant with a baby boy, was fatally shot in the head on a Sunday afternoon at the Gables Apartments where she lived. In the immediate aftermath, a private vehicle rushed her to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport.
Despite the swift transport, she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival at 1:32 p.m.
The events leading to the shooting were not immediately clear to investigators. The initial response from law enforcement was marked by a search for details, as someone had dropped her off at the ambulance bay of the hospital and left. The Gulfport Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide, questioning several individuals to piece together the circumstances of her death.
Within a day, the investigation led to the arrests of four teenagers. The alleged shooter, 15-year-old Brenton Brumfield, was charged with second-degree murder for the death of JaKamori and with the homicide of her unborn child. His bond was set at $500,000. Three other teens were accused of attempting to obstruct the investigation. Jamarrion Jackson, 19, along with a 17-year-old and a 13-year-old, were charged with hindering the prosecution. Jackson's bond was set at $25,000. Following their arrests, Brumfield and Jackson were transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center, while the two younger suspects were taken to the Harrison County Youth Detention Center.
