In the summer of 2017, a domestic situation spiraled into a tragic and fatal conclusion for a Gulfport, Mississippi woman. Sierra Jefferson, a 42-year-old female, died on August 10, 2017, three days after being shot by her husband. The incident that led to her death occurred on August 7 behind the Memorial Physicians Clinic on U.S. 49, where she worked as a medical assistant.
Just a week before the shooting, Sierra had enlisted the help of Gulfport police to safely leave her home with
her children following a volatile outburst from her husband, Jerome Jefferson Sr. This was a culmination of ongoing issues, with family members citing Jerome's long-term battle with illegal drugs, likely crack cocaine, as a major factor in his erratic and violent behavior. In the days leading up to the shooting, he had reportedly threatened to 'blow her brains out.' On the day of the attack, Jerome went to his wife's workplace, and they argued behind the building. When Sierra told him their relationship was over and turned to walk away, he shot her in the back of the head.
After the shooting, Sierra Jefferson was rushed to a hospital in Mobile, Alabama, where she was placed on life support. Tragically, her injuries were too severe, and the difficult decision to remove her from life support was made by her eldest son. She passed away just two days before what would have been her 43rd birthday. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Jerome Jefferson Sr. turned himself in to the Harrison County jail.
Initially charged with attempted murder, the charges against Jerome Jefferson Sr. were upgraded to first-degree murder following his wife's death. He was held on a $1 million bond. In January 2019, Jerome Jefferson Sr., then 49, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. He admitted that he did not want their relationship to end and that his actions were a result of that. The court sentenced him to life in prison for the murder of his wife, a mother of three who had been working two jobs to support her family.
