In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Canton, Mississippi, a domestic disturbance call shattered the quiet of the Oakfield Boulevard neighborhood. When Madison County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m. on August 22, 2023, they found a chaotic and tragic situation unfolding. Two individuals were discovered near the entrance of the neighborhood with injuries, and reports indicated an active shooter was still in the vicinity.
The ensuing events would leave two people dead, including 34-year-old Tiara Scott, and two others wounded.
The gunman, identified as 24-year-old Ladarrius Johnson, was located by law enforcement in the area. When confronted by the deputies, Johnson allegedly brandished a weapon, leading to an officer-involved shooting. In the end, Johnson took his own life. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to handle the inquiry into the officer-involved shooting aspect of the incident.
The initial domestic dispute is believed to have escalated, resulting in Johnson fatally shooting Tiara Scott and injuring two other individuals before his encounter with law enforcement.
