A 29-year-old woman, Melissa Primer, was fatally shot by her stepfather in Canton, Mississippi. The tragic event unfolded in the driveway of a home where an argument between Primer and her 52-year-old stepfather, Torres Harris, escalated with deadly consequences. While the two were in a car, Harris produced a firearm and shot his stepdaughter. A child who was present in the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the shooting was physically unharmed.
Following the shooting, Harris fled
the scene on foot and ran to a nearby coin laundry where he was employed part-time. Witnesses inside the business reported that upon entering, Harris instructed customers to leave, stating that he had no intention of going to jail. A Canton police officer and a Madison County sheriff's deputy responded to the location and attempted to negotiate with him.
The standoff reached a fatal conclusion when Harris raised his weapon at the officers. In response, both officers discharged their firearms, killing him at the scene. Family members who arrived were in shock, expressing their disbelief and lack of knowledge about what could have provoked the violent confrontation. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called to handle the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
