In the predawn hours of a Tuesday in Canton, Mississippi, a home on Chestnut Alley became the scene of a brutal act of violence that claimed the lives of a young expectant mother and her brother. Maudilia Martina Ramirez Garcia, a 19-year-old Hispanic female who was eight months pregnant, was fatally shot and pronounced dead at the scene on December 29, 2020.
Her 20-year-old brother, Faustino Ramirez Garcia, was also found deceased outside the home, having been shot in the back of the head.
The grim discovery was made after a friend of Faustino's found him and alerted the police shortly after 1:30 a.m. Inside the residence, officers found Maudilia, who had been shot in the face. The tragedy was compounded by the discovery of Maudilia's toddler daughter, who had also been shot in the face but survived the attack. The young child was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. A male witness who was present during the home invasion managed to escape unharmed by hiding in a closet.
In the wake of the double homicide, the Canton Police Department began an investigation, with initial beliefs that the killings occurred during a botched robbery. Authorities appealed to the community for any information that could lead to the identification and capture of the person or persons responsible for the violent deaths. As of early 2021, no suspects had been publicly identified, and no arrests had been made in connection with the case, leaving a family and community awaiting answers and justice for the tragic loss of a young mother, her unborn child, and her brother.
