On a Friday afternoon in Columbus, Mississippi, the life of 23-year-old Amarcus McMillian was cut short in an act of violence. On May 13, 2022, emergency services responded to a call at an apartment on Waterworks Road, where they found McMillian deceased from a gunshot wound. Another individual, a female, was also injured in the incident but survived with non-life-threatening injuries. The Lowndes County Coroner officially identified McMillian, and an autopsy was ordered to determine the precise cause of his death.
Investigators learned that a masked individual had entered the apartment and opened fire. In the days following the shooting, the Columbus Police Department appealed to the community for assistance in identifying a suspect. This appeal proved fruitful, as 20-year-old Johnathan J. Slaughter of Macon soon turned himself in to the authorities. Slaughter was subsequently charged with murder for his role in McMillian's death and aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by the second victim.
The legal proceedings against Slaughter culminated in August 2024, when he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. A Lowndes County Circuit Court judge sentenced him to 15 years in prison for the killing of Amarcus McMillian.
