In the late afternoon of a September day in Columbus, Mississippi, the life of Walter James Kyles, a 56-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On Saturday, September 29, 2018, Kyles was discovered behind an apartment complex at the intersection of 11th Street and 11th Avenue South, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Authorities were called to the scene after receiving reports of a man lying on the ground. His body was subsequently sent to the State Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy.
The investigation into the death of Walter Kyles quickly pointed to a suspect who was known to him. Less than a day after Kyles's body was found, Terry Lee Bradford, a 55-year-old resident of Washington Avenue, turned himself into the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office. Investigators believed that a prior altercation between the two men had escalated, leading to the violent encounter that ended Kyles's life. Bradford was subsequently charged with murder.
Before the arrest was made public, law enforcement officials met with Walter Kyles's family to privately disclose the details of the case and inform them of the arrest. The Columbus Police Chief publicly stated that a collaborative effort between the police department and the community was instrumental in the swift identification and apprehension of the suspect. While the primary suspect was in custody, the police chief also indicated that further charges against other individuals might be possible as the investigation continued.
