In the heart of Columbus, Mississippi, a life was cut tragically short on November 9, 2020. Tarcari Tyshun Walker, a 24-year-old male, was fatally shot near the intersection of Seventh Avenue North and 22nd Street around noon. The incident stemmed from an argument between Walker and another man. Walker, who was on foot, had approached a red or maroon Jeep driven by the man he appeared to know.
During the course of their dispute in the street, a single gunshot rang out.
Struck in the chest, Walker managed to flee to the porch of a nearby home before he collapsed. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found him unresponsive and immediately began to perform CPR in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite their efforts, Tarcari Tyshun Walker succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the porch. His body was later sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Pearl for an autopsy.
The Columbus Police Department quickly identified a person of interest in the shooting, Jatavis Deonte Williams, then 21 years old. Just two days after the fatal shooting, Williams turned himself into the authorities. He was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Walker's death. In November 2021, a grand jury in the 14th Circuit Court District indicted Williams for the murder of Tarcari Tyshun Walker.
In August 2022, Jatavis Williams stood trial for the first-degree murder of his childhood friend. The prosecution argued that Williams intentionally shot Walker. The defense, however, claimed that Williams acted in self-defense, stating that Walker had been behaving erratically and that Williams feared for his life. After a three-day trial and two and a half hours of deliberation, the jury found Jatavis Williams guilty. He was sentenced to the mandatory term of life in prison for the murder of Tarcari Tyshun Walker.
