An 18-year-old Black female, Tawhia Bell, was found dead in Jackson, Mississippi, in the early morning hours of August 3, 2022. Responding to a single-car accident at the intersection of Bailey Avenue and Oak Street around 3:58 a.m., officers discovered Bell unresponsive inside a black 2013 Honda Accord that had crashed.
Initial observations at the scene led to conflicting information regarding the cause of her death. Medical personnel who examined Ms. Bell at the location confirmed that she had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, leading investigators to initially suspect foul play. However, the Jackson Police Department also considered the possibility that her death was a direct result of trauma sustained during the vehicle collision. To determine the definitive cause of death, her body was sent to the Hinds County coroner for an autopsy.
