Deputy Sheriff Albert Ochoa Garza, aged 48, was shot and killed on July 30, 1979, while intervening in a robbery at a jewelry store located at 2607 Richmond Avenue in Houston, Texas. He was off-duty at the time and had stopped by the store to visit the owner when he was informed of the robbery. Upon identifying himself as a law enforcement officer, the suspects opened fire, killing him instantly.
The suspects fled to New Orleans, Louisiana, where one of them was killed in a shootout with
police. The remaining two suspects were apprehended. One of the suspects was convicted and sentenced to death, while the other was convicted of aggravated robbery. The suspect who was sentenced to death died on November 2, 2011, while still on death row.
Deputy Garza had served with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for one year and had previously served with the Harris County Constable's Office - Precinct 1 for nine years. His death was a tragic loss, and he is remembered for his bravery and dedication to protecting the citizens of Harris County.
