In the early morning hours of August 4, 2022, the life of 36-year-old LaMarcus D. Martin, a Black male also known as 'Iceberg,' was tragically cut short in Greenville, Mississippi. Around 1:30 a.m., Greenville Police responded to a disturbance call near the intersection of Union Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. North. Upon their arrival, they discovered Martin unresponsive near a vehicle, suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his head. He was rushed to Delta Health-The Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Martin's death moved swiftly, and authorities identified two suspects in connection with the homicide. Marquis Lattimore, then 23, and Geremy Coleman, then 26, were arrested shortly after the incident. Lattimore was charged with capital murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, while Coleman was charged with murder. Both men were subsequently held at the Washington County Regional Correctional Facility. The investigation revealed that the shooting occurred after a verbal altercation. Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the fatal shooting, showing Coleman being handed a firearm, which he then used to shoot and kill Martin.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for the family of LaMarcus Martin, a father of eleven. In February 2025, Geremy Coleman, then 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. In a courtroom filled with Martin's family, he admitted to the killing. Coleman was sentenced to 35 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with 25 of those years to be served without the possibility of parole. Following his prison term, he will be under post-release supervision for five years. The case against Marquis Lattimore is a separate matter. The community mourned the loss of Martin, holding funeral services for him on August 20, 2022, at Vessel of Mercy Ministries.
