In the late summer evening of August 20, 2023, the life of 17-year-old Jabari Násir Walker was tragically cut short in Statesboro, Georgia. A senior at Statesboro High School who was also dual-enrolled at Ogeechee Technical College with aspirations of becoming a certified welder, Jabari was found with multiple gunshot wounds at a residence in the 100 block of Ladd Circle.
Emergency services transported him to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the young man's death quickly unfolded as a complex case involving multiple crime scenes. Less than an hour before the shooting, Statesboro Police had responded to a robbery at the Eagle Court Apartments on Lanier Drive, where a man reported being robbed by several male suspects who then fled in a vehicle. Investigators soon determined that this robbery was connected to Walker's homicide and also to a vehicle that had been reported stolen to the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned and was processed for evidence.
After a meticulous two-month investigation that included canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and video evidence, as well as issuing multiple search warrants, detectives made several arrests in November 2023. Four teenagers from Statesboro were taken into custody and charged in connection with the death of Jabari Walker. The suspects were identified as 17-year-old Cameron Rock and 17-year-old Lucas Fields, along with a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old who were not publicly named because they are juveniles.
The four teenagers face serious charges, including murder and aggravated assault for their alleged roles in the fatal shooting of Walker. They have also been charged with robbery in connection to the incident at Eagle Court Apartments and face charges related to the stolen vehicle. Following their arrests, the suspects were held in the custody of either the Bulloch County Jail or the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. The investigation into their activities is ongoing, with the possibility of further charges being filed.
