In the summer of 2019, the city of Greenville, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent death of a beloved community member. Joe Sykes, a 64-year-old man, was fatally shot on the evening of Saturday, June 22, 2019. The incident occurred just before 11 p.m. in the 400th block of Sunflower Street, an area near the well-known Doe's Eat Place, where Sykes had been a familiar and welcoming face for over two decades.
