On a September evening in 2015, a fatal encounter unfolded in Greenville, Mississippi, that would cut short the life of Jonathan Daniels, a 30-year-old male from Jackson. The incident, which took place on September 10th at an Exxon gas station on Highway 82, was ostensibly arranged for a narcotic transaction. Daniels was approached by a man, and during the course of their meeting, a single shot was fired, striking Daniels in the torso.
Despite his grave injury, he managed to flee to a nearby Captain D's restaurant, where he collapsed. He was later pronounced dead at Delta Regional Medical Center.
The investigation that followed the shooting quickly began to unravel the conspiracy that led to Daniels' death. Law enforcement learned that Merick Cleveland had lured Daniels from Jackson to Greenville under the guise of purchasing a large quantity of marijuana. However, the plan was not a simple transaction but a violent robbery. Upon Daniels' arrival to make the sale, Cleveland shot him, stole the drugs, and fled the scene. Among them were Howard Williams, who was apprehended by U.S. Marshals on September 18, 2015, and charged with capital murder and conspiracy. Other suspects charged in connection with the crime included Jonathan Harris, Archie Buford, and Jonathan Robinson.
In January 2019, a measure of justice was served when Merick Cleveland pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and trafficking marijuana. A judge sentenced him to twenty-five years in prison for his role in the killing of Jonathan Daniels. The prosecution highlighted the diligent work of law enforcement in holding the perpetrators accountable for the fatal scheme that transpired at the gas station. Other defendants involved in the crime had been sentenced previously for their parts in the incident.
