In the winter of 2019, the community of Greenville, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent and untimely death of 41-year-old Tarus Dandridge. On the evening of February 6th, Dandridge was fatally shot outside the Kool-It Lounge, a local establishment on Nelson Street. The incident left family and friends to grapple with the sudden loss of a man described as someone who brought life, commanded respect, and fiercely protected his loved ones.

The Greenville Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the shooting. Through their diligent efforts, which included securing vital evidence such as surveillance footage and witness statements, they were able to identify a suspect. The investigation led to the arrest of Anthony Smith, who was charged in connection with Dandridge's death. The authorities' quick and efficient work in identifying and capturing Smith was a crucial step in the pursuit of justice for Dandridge and his grieving family.

In May of 2023, the legal proceedings against Anthony Smith came to a conclusion. Facing a trial set to begin before the Circuit Court of Washington County, Smith opted to plead guilty to a charge of Second Degree Murder. Recognized as a habitual criminal, Smith was sentenced to forty years with the Mississippi Department of Corrections. The terms of his sentence stipulate that he must serve twenty-nine of those years in custody. Due to the violent nature of his crime, he will not be eligible for early release or parole, ensuring he will serve the entirety of his mandated time behind bars. The conviction brought a measure of closure to a case that highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence on the community.
