In the late summer of 2022, a promising life was tragically cut short, leaving a community in mourning and a family searching for answers. Carson Sistrunk, a 24-year-old White male from Pearl, Mississippi, was reported missing by his family on September 4, 2022. Known for his love of the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing, Sistrunk had planned to meet a woman he had connected with through the social media platform Snapchat. This arrangement would prove to be a fatal one.
Concern grew when he did not return and could not be reached.
The investigation into his disappearance quickly gained momentum. A significant break in the case came when law enforcement located Sistrunk's Ford Raptor truck in Jefferson Davis County. Behind the wheel was a 20-year-old woman named Sierra Jane Inscoe. Initially, she was taken into custody for questioning in what was then a missing person case. The discovery of what appeared to be blood in the truck bed heightened the sense of urgency and foreboding. The search for Sistrunk came to a devastating end on September 7, 2022, when pipeline workers discovered his body on Gulf Camp Road, a gravel road in a remote area of Jefferson Davis County. He had been shot to death.
Following the discovery of Sistrunk's body, the focus of the investigation shifted to Sierra Inscoe. After being questioned and initially released, an arrest warrant was issued, and she was taken back into custody and charged with his murder. As the legal process unfolded, a troubled past began to emerge for Inscoe, with acquaintances alleging a history of deceit. In August 2023, a Jefferson Davis County Grand Jury indicted her on the charge of murder.
In July 2024, Sierra Jane Inscoe, then 22, pleaded guilty to the murder of Carson Sistrunk. The plea came before a 15th Circuit Court Judge, bringing a legal conclusion to the case that had gripped the community for nearly two years. She was sentenced to 40 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with a stipulation that she must serve 35 of those years without the possibility of parole or early release. While the court proceedings brought a measure of justice, the motive behind the senseless killing was not publicly disclosed, leaving a painful void for those who knew and loved Carson Sistrunk.
