In the winter of 2014, a life was tragically cut short in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Courtney Darnell Parks, a 26-year-old Black man, was fatally shot on the evening of December 29th. The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. in a common area of the Plaza Hills East Apartment complex, situated near 15th Street and 129th East Avenue. First responders arrived to a grim scene, finding Parks wounded.
Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries after running behind a building in the complex.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing Parks' own vehicle, a 2007 four-door Chevrolet Impala, hastily leaving the area shortly after the gunshots rang out. This detail added a layer of mystery to the initial stages of the investigation. The abandoned vehicle was discovered approximately a mile away from the apartment complex, prompting a thorough search for evidence by homicide investigators. In the days following the shooting, the motive was not immediately clear to law enforcement.
The investigation into Courtney Darnell Parks's death soon focused on Demario Veshawn Bethany, a 24-year-old man from Tulsa. Prosecutors alleged that Bethany had lured Parks to the apartment complex with the intention of robbing him. The planned robbery escalated, leading Bethany to use a. 22-caliber revolver to shoot Parks multiple times. In January 2015, Bethany was formally charged with first-degree felony murder and attempted robbery with a firearm. After a trial and six hours of deliberation by the jury, Demario Bethany was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Courtney Darnell Parks, bringing a measure of justice to a senseless act of violence.
