Do you know who murdered Joseph Adetula? On the evening of July 4, 2005, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 18-year-old Joseph Adetula was walking north on North Frankfort Avenue. He was returning from a convenience store where he had gone to buy fireworks. As he made his way, a gold-colored, four-door vehicle, possibly an Oldsmobile or a Cadillac, pulled up alongside him. Suddenly, shots rang out from the car, striking Joseph multiple times.
Emergency services were called at approximately 8:50 p.m., and police arrived at the 5600 block of North Frankfort to find the young man lying in the street with four to five gunshot wounds. He was rushed to St. John Medical Center, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting was immediately launched by the Tulsa Police Department. Detectives recovered nine-millimeter shell casings from the scene and interviewed numerous individuals who were in the area at the time of the incident. Despite the presence of many potential witnesses, no one was able to provide a clear identification of the suspect or suspects. The description of the vehicle remained the only significant lead. Though there was some initial information about potential bad blood between Joseph and his assailants, this did not lead to any concrete developments in the case.
To this day, the murder of Joseph Adetula remains unsolved, and no arrests have ever been made. The case is now considered a cold case, a source of ongoing pain for his family and friends. In the wake of his son’s death, Dayo Adetula established the Joseph Adetula Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing violence among young people. The foundation serves as a lasting legacy for a promising young athlete whose life was cut tragically short in a senseless act of violence that continues to be a mystery.
