In the winter of 2015, the life of Christopher Randall 'Bubba' Blanton, a 29-year-old White/Caucasian man, was tragically cut short in McAlester, Oklahoma. On the first of December, police responded to a call at a residence on Comanche Avenue where they discovered Blanton with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. A co-owner of a lawn care business and an electrician by trade, he was known for his love of the outdoors, often spending his time fishing and camping with family and friends.
The
investigation into his death quickly revealed a grim narrative of a dispute that had spiraled into violence. Authorities believe an argument, possibly connected to drugs, was the catalyst for the deadly encounter. Blanton's family later spoke about his recent struggles and his involvement with a dangerous crowd, expressing their hope that his story might serve as a warning to others facing similar battles with addiction.
In the days following the shooting, the McAlester community was on edge as the search for the primary suspect ensued. Following an emotional plea from Blanton's grieving family, 20-year-old Garrett Jeffrey Freeman turned himself in to the authorities on December 3, 2015. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Blanton's death.
The investigation did not end with Freeman's surrender. Two other men were also implicated in the events surrounding the fatal shooting. Jonathan Shane Powell was charged as an accessory to murder, and Michael Medley was arrested in the early morning hours following the incident. The arrests brought a small measure of closure to a community shaken by the violent loss of one of its own.
