In the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2020, the life of 25-year-old Dustin Parker, a male resident of McAlester, Oklahoma, was tragically cut short. Parker was working as a driver for Rover Taxi, a company he had co-founded, and was generously offering free rides to ensure people in his community got home safely after their New Year's Eve celebrations.
It was during this act of kindness that he was fatally shot.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., law enforcement responded to a call and discovered Parker in his taxi on West Delaware Avenue. The vehicle had been struck by multiple bullets, and Parker was found deceased inside. In the initial stages of the investigation, the McAlester Police Department stated that while they were not ruling out any possibilities, they did not immediately suspect the shooting to be a hate crime.
Dustin Parker was a beloved husband and a father to four children. Beyond his devotion to his family, he was a prominent and active member of his community. He was a founding member of the McAlester chapter of Oklahomans for Equality, a testament to his dedication to advocating for the rights and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals. His friends and family remember him as a man with a brilliant and contagious smile, whose positive attitude had the power to brighten any room.
In the wake of his death, the community mourned the loss of a man described as incredibly generous, kind, and empathetic. A reward was offered for any information that could lead to a break in the case. However, despite the efforts of law enforcement and the pleas from his grieving family, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Dustin Parker. The case remains unsolved, leaving a void in the lives of his loved ones and a lingering question of who was responsible for this senseless act of violence.
