In the winter of 1910, a brave lawman, Deputy Sheriff Howard Edmond Murray, a 24-year-old male, met a tragic and untimely end in the line of duty in Mcalester, Oklahoma. His death stemmed from a violent encounter on January 27th, when he attempted to arrest a man. During the arrest, the suspect opened fire, striking Deputy Murray.
Despite being mortally wounded, Deputy Murray demonstrated incredible courage and resolve.
He managed to return fire, and his shots proved fatal for his assailant, neutralizing the threat on the spot. The man he was attempting to arrest had a criminal history, having previously been imprisoned for impersonating a federal officer.
Deputy Sheriff Howard Edmond Murray succumbed to his gunshot wound the following day, on January 28, 1910. Because his killer was slain during the confrontation, no further arrests were made in connection with his death, and the case was considered closed. The community mourned the loss of a dedicated officer who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his fellow citizens.
