In the spring of 2019, the life of 21-year-old Lane Crawley of Mcalester, Oklahoma, was cut tragically short. On the evening of April 7, 2019, an altercation on Krebs Lake Road, just north of Krebs, would end in his untimely death. The young man, who was a new husband and aspiring business owner, became involved in a dispute that would ultimately place him in the path of deadly violence.
Reports from the incident indicate that Crawley was involved in a physical confrontation with a minor
at a residence. Following this initial altercation, as Crawley was returning to his vehicle, he was shot multiple times. He sustained gunshot wounds to his back, arm, and the back of his head, injuries that proved to be fatal.
In the wake of the shooting, an arrest was made in connection with Lane Crawley's death. Tyas Joseph Short was taken into custody and subsequently faced a charge of second-degree murder in Indian Country. The legal proceedings that followed delved into the complexities of the altercation and the moments leading up to the fatal shots.
Ultimately, Tyas Joseph Short pleaded guilty to the charge of second-degree murder. In his plea, he admitted to willfully and deliberately shooting Crawley with malice aforethought, and acknowledged that he was not acting in self-defense. As a result of a plea agreement, Short was sentenced to up to 14 years in prison, to be followed by a five-year period of supervised release. Additional charges related to the use and discharge of a firearm during the commission of the crime were dismissed as part of the plea deal.
