In the early morning hours of July 14, 2016, a confrontation at an Oklahoma City apartment complex tragically ended the life of 38-year-old Kenta Stepney. The incident unfolded at the Potomac House Apartments, situated near S.W. 59th and S. May Avenue, escalating from a dispute into a fatal shootout.
The events of that morning began when a woman returned to the apartment complex and informed Stepney that she had been harassed by an individual in the parking lot.
In response, Stepney went to confront the person accused of the harassment. This confrontation quickly intensified, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
A security guard at the complex, 31-year-old Joseph Modia, was drawn to the chaotic scene. According to reports, Modia witnessed Stepney firing a weapon. When Modia confronted him, Stepney allegedly raised his weapon and fired at the security guard. In what was described as an act of self-defense, Modia returned fire, fatally wounding Stepney.
Following the shooting, law enforcement arrived and began their investigation into what became the 40th homicide in Oklahoma City that year. Joseph Modia was taken in for questioning by the police and was subsequently released. The case was then prepared for presentation to the district attorney's office to determine whether any charges would be filed against the security guard.
