Jake McLain, a 19-year-old White man from Idabel, Oklahoma, was the son of a McCurtain County sheriff's deputy. His life was cut short on the night of Friday, March 15, 2019, during a prearranged meeting in Oklahoma City that turned violent.
That evening, McLain and his friend, 20-year-old Seth Tisho, drove from their hometown to the Liberty Station apartments in the city's northeast.
They had arranged to sell four ounces of marijuana for $600 to two men, Jonate Jefferson and Elijah Wilson. The buyers, however, later admitted to investigators that their actual plan was to rob McLain and Tisho.
The transaction took place inside McLain’s car. During the encounter, Jefferson, who was armed with an assault rifle, pointed the weapon at McLain. A struggle over the gun broke out, and Jefferson confessed to police that he shot McLain during the fight. After the shooting, both Jefferson and Wilson fled the scene. When responding officers arrived, they found Jake McLain deceased in his vehicle from a gunshot wound.
The investigation led police to a nearby apartment where they located both Jefferson and Wilson, as well as the assault rifle believed to be the murder weapon. The two men were arrested. Seth Tisho was also taken into custody on a murder complaint, as he had been engaged in a felony drug transaction that resulted in a death.
The murder complaint against Tisho was later dismissed. He was instead charged with drug possession with intent to distribute, a crime to which he pleaded guilty. In exchange for his testimony against the other men, Tisho received a 10-year suspended sentence. Following a preliminary hearing in August 2019, both Jonate Jefferson, 22, and Elijah Wilson, 22, were ordered to stand trial on first-degree murder charges.
At his trial, Jefferson testified that he had acted in self-defense, but the jury rejected his claim. In January 2020, an Oklahoma County jury found Jonate Jefferson guilty of first-degree murder. The jury recommended a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. As of that month, his co-defendant, Elijah Wilson, was still awaiting trial.
