In the cold, early hours of January 26, 2024, violence erupted within the walls of a vacant building near Northwest 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Oklahoma City. When police responded to reports of a shooting, they discovered a grim scene. Inside, 35-year-old Danielle Mahaffey was found deceased, a victim of gunfire. Nearby, 29-year-old Joshua Williams, a Black/African American male, was found critically injured, having also been shot.
Emergency medical personnel rushed Joshua to
a local hospital, where he clung to life for five days. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries on January 31, 2024. His death, alongside Mahaffey's, prompted the Oklahoma City Police Department to launch a double homicide investigation. The vacant building where the two were shot was known to be a place where unsheltered individuals sought refuge, and investigators believed several people were present at the time of the incident.
For a time, the case remained without arrests as detectives processed evidence and interviewed potential witnesses. The motive behind the killings was not immediately clear to the public. However, the investigation eventually led to a significant breakthrough. Police arrested two individuals in connection with the double murder: Nicholas Myers and a 16-year-old suspect.
