In a heartbreaking turn of events that cut a young life short, 17-year-old William Jackson, a Black male, was fatally shot on June 8, 2024, inside a convenience store in Oklahoma City. The incident, which marked the city's 37th homicide of the year, unfolded just before noon at a store located near Wilshire Boulevard and Northwest Expressway.
According to reports, an altercation involving Jackson and several other individuals escalated, leading to the deadly shooting.
When Oklahoma City Police officers arrived at the scene, they found Jackson deceased. The initial investigation suggested a dispute preceded the gunfire.
In the days that followed the tragic event, law enforcement officials worked diligently to identify those responsible. Their efforts, aided by tips from the public and a review of surveillance footage, led to a significant breakthrough. On June 13, 2024, police arrested 18-year-old Carnell Matheri in connection with the shooting.
Matheri was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Matheri had followed Jackson into the convenience store where the fatal confrontation occurred. In September 2025, a jury found Carnell Matheri guilty of the murder of William Jackson. The jury recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of judicial closure to a case that ended one young man's life and irrevocably altered another's.
