In the quiet streets of Ogden, Utah, a 59-year-old White male named Clinton Burrows was known for his friendly and approachable nature; he could strike up a conversation with anyone and was never seen as malicious or aggressive. At the time of his death, he was living with and caring for his mother. On the night of June 12, 2022, while walking down Patterson Street, his life was tragically cut short. He was found deceased in the roadway with two gunshot wounds.
The incident was the result of a robbery attempt that turned fatal.
The investigation into the death of Clinton Burrows led Ogden police to a nearby house where a party had been taking place on the night of the incident. In the course of their inquiries, investigators discovered that Burrows' phone had been stolen, and its location history showed it had traveled to Davis County after the shooting. A crucial tip on July 7 pointed to Erik Orozco Sanches as the shooter. Sanches' own phone location data matched the path of Burrows' stolen phone.
Following the tip, police located and arrested Erik Orozco Sanches, who was 19 at the time. During questioning, Sanches admitted his involvement in the robbery and shooting. He informed the police that he and another individual, 19-year-old Eric Aparicio, had seen Burrows walking alone and made the decision to rob him. Sanches stated that Burrows resisted the robbery, and a struggle ensued, during which Burrows was shot. Sanches also admitted to taking and later destroying Burrows' phone. A 9 mm handgun, which Sanches confessed was the weapon used in the homicide, was recovered from his home.
Based on Sanches' confession, Eric Aparicio was also arrested. Both men were charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. Sanches faced additional charges of obstructing justice and use of a firearm by a restricted person. In a subsequent plea deal, Erik Orozco Sanches pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of murder and aggravated robbery.
