A man dies after being robbed On a February evening in 1988, 67-year-old Caucasian male Albert William Spatz was walking home after getting off a bus in Ogden, Utah. As he made his way along Monroe Boulevard, a man emerged from an alley and ran towards him, demanding money. When Spatz replied that he had none, the man knocked him to the ground with enough force to render him unconscious and cause a significant head injury upon impact with the cement.
The assailant then took Spatz's wallet, which contained $20, and fled back into the alley.
Spatz was able to make his way to a nearby residence and call the police. Officers who responded to the scene noted that he had a large lump on the upper right side of his head, a swollen right cheekbone, and a cut inside his mouth. He was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital for his injuries. Spatz described his attacker to the police as a Black male, approximately 5'10" and 150 pounds, with short hair, wearing a black coat and tan pants. Despite a search of the area, officers were unable to locate the suspect.
After being released from the hospital into the care of a friend, Spatz's condition took a turn for the worse. The following morning, his son, Alan, was unable to wake him and rushed him back to the hospital. There, he underwent immediate surgery to relieve bleeding on his brain. Albert William Spatz never regained consciousness following the surgery and was placed in intensive care. He died on May 6, 1988, from what an autopsy determined were complications from the blunt force head injury he sustained during the robbery weeks earlier. To this day, no arrests have been made in connection with his death, and the case remains an unsolved homicide.
