On a tragic evening in Ogden, Utah, the life of a young boy named Phillip An, aged 6, was cut short. It was November 12, 1989, when a devastating event unfolded within the walls of the family's home, located above their business, Hans Market. In an act of violence that shattered a family, Phillip, his younger sister Sarah An, who was only 2 years old, and their 34-year-old mother, Nan Heu An, were all killed.
The person responsible was the children's own father and Nan Heu's husband, 33-year-old Kyu Suhn An.
The discovery was made after Kyu Suhn An placed a harrowing phone call to his brother in Texas, confessing to the horrific acts he had just committed. Alarmed, the brother immediately contacted the authorities. When police arrived at the grocery store on 28th Street at approximately 8:23 p.m., they were met with a grim scene. Inside the family's living quarters, they found Nan Heu An on the couch and the two children in a bedroom. Each had been shot once in the head.
Downstairs in the grocery store, officers found Kyu Suhn An still alive, with a. 38 caliber revolver nearby. He had turned the gun on himself in an apparent suicide attempt. He was quickly transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his self-inflicted injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation that followed concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide, with Kyu Suhn An as the sole perpetrator. As the individual responsible for the deaths of his wife and two young children had also died, there were no arrests to be made and no suspects to be sought. The case was subsequently closed, leaving a community to mourn the loss of an entire family and investigators without a clear motive for the devastating tragedy that transpired.
