On December 30, 2016, a day after his 37th birthday, Steven Christopher Snider, a Caucasian male, was shot and killed in Ogden, Utah. The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. in the vicinity of 27th Street and Adams Avenue. Snider, a father of five, was remembered by loved ones for his boisterous and infectious laughter, his joking manner, and the engaging stories he would tell.
Despite facing personal struggles with addiction, he was described as a caring and creative man who enjoyed rapping, camping, and exploring Utah's abandoned mines.
The events leading to Snider's death began with a text message he allegedly sent to a woman, which her brother, Agustin Gil, found disrespectful. Gil, a co-worker of Snider's, confronted him at an apartment complex. During the ensuing altercation, Snider fled down the stairs with Gil in pursuit. A struggle took place on the stairs, and Snider slipped on the ice outside the building. It was at this point that another man, Jonathan Delgado, a co-worker of Gil's, became involved.
While Gil and Snider were scuffling outside, Delgado, who had accompanied Gil to the apartment, fired a single gunshot. Ogden police officers, who were conducting a traffic stop nearby, heard the shot and saw a man standing over Snider before running into a nearby apartment building. Snider died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest that struck his heart. The man who fled was identified as 32-year-old Jonathan Delgado. He barricaded himself inside the apartment, leading to a standoff with a SWAT team that lasted for several hours before he surrendered peacefully.
Following an investigation, Jonathan Delgado was arrested and charged with murder and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors argued that Delgado, who had been drinking and using methamphetamine with Gil before the confrontation, shot Snider because of the text message. In the moments after the shooting, Delgado reportedly answered a call from Gil's sister and admitted to shooting Snider, claiming he did it for her. In September 2018, a jury found Jonathan Delgado guilty of murder, a first-degree felony, and obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony.
