In the quiet city of Ogden, Utah, the evening of February 28, 2021, brought a tragic and violent end to the life of Satnam Singh, a 65-year-old male immigrant from India. Singh, the beloved owner of the Super Grocery on Monroe Boulevard, was a pillar of his community, known for his kindness and generosity. For 21 years, he had owned and operated his store, often extending a helping hand to those in need.
On that fateful Sunday night, while working a shift he had picked up for an employee, his life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
Just before midnight, a male individual entered the Super Grocery. After a brief conversation, the male shot and killed Singh. The incident, captured on surveillance video, showed a suspect wearing a blue surgical mask, black gloves, and a gray Oakland Raiders hoodie. The Ogden Police Department quickly launched an investigation, releasing images from the surveillance footage to the public in the hopes of identifying the person responsible for this shocking crime that sent ripples of grief through the community.
The investigation, aided by tips and video submissions from the community, led to a swift arrest. A juvenile male was taken into custody as a person of interest and was subsequently charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. Due to his status as a juvenile, his name was initially withheld. The suspect was later identified as 15-year-old Antonio Gianny Garcia. Garcia admitted to police that he had planned the robbery because he wanted more cash and had even stopped smoking THC the day before to ensure he was sober for the crime.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Garcia, who was tried as an adult, entered into a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to the reduced charges of felony discharge of a firearm and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies. This agreement was made with the consent of Singh's grieving family. Ultimately, 16-year-old Antonino Gianny Garcia was sentenced to serve two consecutive sentences of five years to life in prison. He will remain in a juvenile detention facility until he turns 21, at which point he will be transferred to the Utah State Prison. The community mourned the loss of a man described as a friend to all, someone who offered advice and cared deeply about the lives of his customers, leaving a void in the neighborhood he had served for over two decades.
