On a Tuesday afternoon in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a dispute that began on the road tragically cut short the life of 24-year-old Lakeia Gaines. On February 4, 2020, what started as a road rage incident near East 51st Street and Memorial Drive escalated into a fatal confrontation in a Walgreens parking lot. Gaines, a Black / African American woman, was a passenger in a car with another woman and her own four-year-old daughter when their vehicle and another driven by Nathaniel Chilcoat nearly
collided.
Following the near-miss, both cars pulled into the pharmacy parking lot, where a verbal altercation ensued between Gaines and the 29-year-old Chilcoat. The argument intensified, and Gaines reportedly threw a water bottle at Chilcoat's vehicle. In response, Chilcoat fired a gun into the car Gaines occupied, striking her in the upper torso. Gaines was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. Her young daughter and the other woman in the car were not physically harmed in the incident.
Nathaniel Chilcoat was promptly arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Lakeia Gaines. The case proceeded to trial, where Chilcoat faced charges of both first and second-degree murder. The prosecution argued that his actions were an unjustified response to the altercation. However, the defense maintained that Chilcoat acted in self-defense, claiming he was threatened during the heated confrontation. After deliberating for approximately two hours, the jury acquitted Chilcoat of both murder charges on November 19, 2021, bringing the legal proceedings to a close.
