Steven “Trent” Scoggins, a 49-year-old White/Caucasian male, was a well-known musician in his Muskogee, Oklahoma community. A passionate artist, he had played in several bands and operated his own recording studio, Donkey Mountain Studio. Beyond his music, he was a devoted family man to his wife, Rhonda, and their three sons, Jacob, Jonah, and Oliver.
On the evening of December 12, 2021, tragedy struck the Scoggins family. Their neighbor, Robert Rainford, knocked on their back door.
When Trent Scoggins answered, Rainford shot him ten times, taking his life in the presence of his family. The motive for this violent act was not immediately clear, though Rainford would later make an unsubstantiated claim that the shooting was related to drugs. The incident occurred just outside the Muskogee city limits, near 70th and Hancock.
Robert Rainford was arrested and charged with the murder of Trent Scoggins. The case proceeded through the legal system, marked by delays as Rainford entered a plea of insanity, which required evaluations to determine his mental state at the time of the shooting. During the trial, both Trent's wife, Rhonda, and their son, Jacob, gave emotional testimony, recounting the horrific events of that day. Ultimately, Robert Rainford was found guilty of the murder of Trent Scoggins. Despite the immense pain and loss, Rhonda Scoggins expressed a message of forgiveness towards Rainford and his family.
